E-Commerce - The cultural perspective

Commerce

Commerce in general is basically you set up shop selling a product or service that someone out there needs.  Plain and simple right?  Yes and no.

What the heck does that mean?  Well, simply speaking the real trick to successful commerce.  Its not even a trick.  Its understanding people, more importantly their behaviour.  Most products are sold not because people have an actual need for it, but they "need" it emotionally.  If you think of about the bird's eye view, do we "need" a vacuum cleaner?  Do we really need that funny looking duster, or that odd to use thingamagigy that you bought from the infomercial?

Intelligence

Intelligence is simply speaking, using the data from previous customers (preferably get repeat business from previous customers) to influence the decisions of future customers (or repeat customers).  You see, if you put a billion road blocks in them actually ordering, the likelihood of them actually ordering is lessened, and will eventually lead to the well known phenomenon in E-commerce called "Cart abandonment".  It is a well known fact that less than 10% of all visitors to an average e-commerce site actually become paying customers.   Now that's intelligence huh?

There is also a point of cultural differences.  For example, in north America, I love signing up for accounts, because it makes my life so much easier.   I just say what my phone number is, and they pull up my account and make my experience so much more efficient.  I don't want to be on the phone for that long.  Some companies, like the pizza company, would ask for my phone number, and simply take my order.  In 20 minutes I have my dinner or lunch, and I'm happy.

However, when you take the same situation to Sweden, they would be very very skeptical about why you are asking for personal details.  It is considered very rude to ask for such information just like that.  Most companies with call centres, would avoid this question just so they can get the extra sale.  How about that piece of information for intelligence?  Globalization has many little thorny roads to cross, that's for sure.

Human Connection

Human is the true key to making a sale and creating a true brand value.  Many people have relationships based on trust.  Many of them would buy a brand of product simply because their friends have had amazing service from the company and their products.  This is where most companies truly lack in.  I do not have hard evidence to prove this, but as a matter of opinion, this is what will make the difference between a successful company vs a robotic company.   Even if the robotic one looks to be very successful right now.

Sound off below for sure.
